Healthcare
HIPAA and Workstation Hardware: What Actually Matters
There is no such thing as a HIPAA compliant workstation, and any supplier selling you one is telling you something your compliance officer will correct. HIPAA regulates covered entities and business associates — their policies, their risk analysis, their safeguards and their business associate agreements. It does not certify hardware, and no manufacturer holds a HIPAA certification for a machine, because none exists to hold.
What is true, and far more useful, is that the Security Rule's technical safeguards at 45 CFR §164.312 place real requirements on the devices that touch protected health information — encryption and decryption, access control, audit controls, integrity. A workstation cannot make you compliant, but the wrong one can make compliance harder to evidence, and the right one makes several controls straightforward to demonstrate during an audit.
Below is what we specify into healthcare deployments and why, followed by the workstations we quote for imaging, pathology AI and clinical research. If your assessment calls for something specific — a particular FIPS validation, a drive that can be sanitised to NIST 800-88 Purge, chassis intrusion detection — tell us and we will quote to it and supply the manufacturer's documentation for the claim.

What we need to quote accurately
A configuration quote takes minutes when these are known and days of back-and-forth when they are not. You do not need all of them to start — send what you have.
- The workload: model sizes, training or inference, and expected concurrency
- Node count, and whether this is a single system or a scaling cluster
- Rack power and cooling available per rack, and inlet temperature
- Existing estate — the vendor and management tooling you already run
- Network fabric: InfiniBand, Ethernet, and the speed you are standardised on
- Timeline, and whether the budget is approved or being built
How we quote
- 1
Send the requirement
An email, a bill of materials, or a rough description of the workload. All three work.
- 2
We validate the configuration
Accelerator, chassis, fabric, power and cooling checked against each other before anything is priced.
- 3
Itemised quote within 48 hours
Line-by-line pricing, current availability and lead time, with warranty terms stated.
HIPAA compliant workstation — buyer questions
Is any workstation HIPAA certified?
No. There is no HIPAA certification for hardware, from any body or any manufacturer. HIPAA applies to covered entities and business associates, and compliance is assessed on your organisation's administrative, physical and technical safeguards as a whole. A vendor advertising a HIPAA certified or HIPAA compliant computer is describing something that does not exist. What a machine can do is support specific technical safeguards, which is what the specification below is about.
What should I actually specify for a workstation handling PHI?
In practice: a self-encrypting drive with a FIPS 140-2 or 140-3 validated cryptographic module, so encryption at rest is evidenced by a certificate number rather than an assertion; TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot for platform integrity and for BitLocker or LUKS key custody; the ability to disable external ports in firmware where the risk analysis calls for it; and a documented sanitisation path to NIST SP 800-88 for decommissioning. Each of these is verifiable from the manufacturer's own documentation, which is what an auditor will ask for.
Can you supply the compliance documentation?
We supply the manufacturer's documentation — FIPS validation certificate numbers for the drives quoted, the platform's security datasheet, serial numbers and country of manufacture. Those are statements by the manufacturer about the product, and they are what your assessment needs. We do not issue compliance attestations about your environment, and we are not a business associate under HIPAA by virtue of selling you hardware.
Do you sign a Business Associate Agreement?
Selling hardware does not ordinarily make a supplier a business associate, because we do not create, receive, maintain or transmit PHI on your behalf. If your procurement process requires a BAA regardless, raise it with us early and we will look at it rather than surprise you at the PO stage.
What do you supply for PACS and imaging?
Diagnostic imaging is usually driven by the display chain and the certification the reading workstation needs, rather than by raw compute. Tell us the PACS vendor and the workstation specification they certify against, and we will quote the platform, GPU and storage to that specification rather than to a generic build.
