AI network fabric — buyer questions
Do you supply InfiniBand as well as Ethernet?
The parts listed on this page are Ethernet: Spectrum AI-fabric switches, ConnectX and BlueField adapters, and QSFP-DD/OSFP optics and cable. InfiniBand switches and HCAs are not in the published catalogue — they are sourced to order and quoted alongside the cluster design rather than listed as stock lines. Note that the NVIDIA-coded 400G and 800G optics here carry NVIDIA Spectrum and Quantum coding, so the optic side of an InfiniBand build is already covered. Tell us which fabric you are standardising on and we will quote it either way.
What does rail-optimised mean, and does it change the parts list?
In a rail-optimised design each GPU rail in a node connects to its own leaf switch, so traffic between the same rail on different nodes crosses one switch hop instead of traversing a rack leaf. It usually means more, shorter links and a different optic-to-DAC ratio than a conventional top-of-rack layout, because the leaf is no longer in the same rack as every node it serves. The switch models rarely change; the cable schedule always does.
Can 400G switches feed nodes that are still on 100G?
Yes, and it is the normal way to phase an upgrade. A 400G QSFP-DD port breaks out to four 100G QSFP28 ports, and we list 400G QSFP-DD to 4x QSFP28 passive breakout cables at 1m, 1.5m, 2m, 3m and 5m for exactly that. Check the switch supports breakout on the port group you plan to use — we confirm that against the platform before quoting.
Do the optics have to be coded for our switches?
Yes. An optic is coded in EEPROM for a switch vendor, and the wrong coding usually gets the port disabled rather than merely running slow. We list optics coded for Cisco, Arista, Juniper, HPE/Aruba, Dell, Fortinet and NVIDIA, plus multi-coded lines coded to order. Send us the switch model with the order and the optic ships coded to match it.
