The NVMe part of the drive catalogue runs to 178 lines across fourteen manufacturers, and the useful thing is not the number but the coverage. Anything you are likely to be replacing or expanding is here: PCIe 3.0 x4 drives for older platforms, the large PCIe 4.0 x4 population that fits almost everything shipped since, and PCIe 5.0 x4 for current-generation servers.

Form factor is usually what decides the order, not the media. U.2 and U.3 account for most of the range, alongside M.2 boot and cache modules, half-height add-in cards and E1.S EDSFF for hyperscale-style chassis. Endurance is listed where the manufacturer publishes it, from read-intensive through mixed-use to the very high-endurance parts intended for write cache and journalling.

Send us the server or array model rather than a drive part number and we will check it for you. The commonest procurement error we see is a U.3 drive ordered for a backplane that only speaks U.2; the second is a generic-branded drive bought for a chassis whose management controller will flag it as uncertified. Both are avoidable in a two-minute conversation before the order goes in.

A configuration quote takes minutes when these are known and days of back-and-forth when they are not. You do not need all of them to start — send what you have.

  • The workload: model sizes, training or inference, and expected concurrency
  • Node count, and whether this is a single system or a scaling cluster
  • Rack power and cooling available per rack, and inlet temperature
  • Existing estate — the vendor and management tooling you already run
  • Network fabric: InfiniBand, Ethernet, and the speed you are standardised on
  • Timeline, and whether the budget is approved or being built

What is the difference between U.2 and U.3, and are they interchangeable?

Not symmetrically. U.3 is a tri-mode connector: a U.3 backplane accepts SAS, SATA and NVMe in any bay, and will also take a U.2 NVMe drive. A U.2-only backplane will not take a U.3 drive. So if you are buying into an existing chassis the safe order is U.2 unless you have confirmed the backplane is tri-mode; on a new platform U.3 gives you more flexibility later. Send us the server model and we will confirm which it supports.

How do we choose the endurance rating?

Match it to the write pattern, not to a preference for headroom. Read-intensive drives cover the large majority of workloads — dataset serving, VM boot volumes, analytics, content repositories. Move to mixed-use for OLTP databases, virtualisation with heavy write amplification, and general-purpose arrays. The very high-endurance parts exist for a narrow set of jobs — write cache, journals, metadata tiers — and buying one for a general workload is money spent on endurance you will never consume.

Should we buy OEM-branded drives or the manufacturer's own?

It depends how your support contract is written. Dell, HPE and Lenovo drives carry the vendor's own firmware and are what their support organisations expect to find in the chassis; a management controller may report a third-party drive as uncertified even when it works. The manufacturer-branded equivalent is frequently the same silicon at lower cost and is the sensible choice for storage servers, software-defined pools and anything you support yourself. Tell us the chassis and the support arrangement and we will quote both.

Is PCIe Gen5 worth paying for yet?

Only if the workload is bandwidth-bound and the platform has Gen5 lanes to give it. Gen5 doubles per-lane bandwidth, which matters for sequential-heavy work such as dataset streaming to GPUs or large analytics scans; a random-IOPS database will rarely notice. Everything Gen5 is backwards compatible and runs at Gen4 speeds in an older slot, so there is no risk in buying forward if the drives outlive the server.
