Overview

Ubiquiti Enterprise Networking offers capable switching, routing, and Wi-Fi with unified management at a highly competitive cost. Nexus Compute designs and sources Ubiquiti UniFi solutions for organizations that want clean, centrally-managed networking without enterprise-tier complexity or cost. The value is real and so are the boundaries, and we would rather set both out before you buy. What you get is one console for switching, gateway, and Wi-Fi across sites, no per-device licensing, and hardware that a small IT team can actually operate. What you do not get is the support structure, feature depth, and certification coverage of the tier above, which matters if you are regulated, if you run a network someone is contractually obliged to keep up, or if you need a vendor engineer on a bridge call at three in the morning. For a great many offices none of that applies and this is the correct answer. Wi-Fi is where most of the design effort goes: coverage is set by access point placement and the building materials between them, and capacity is set by how many devices share each radio, so we plan placement rather than counting rooms.

Who This Solution Is For

Technical Overview

Ubiquiti UniFi switching (including PoE and multi-gigabit), gateways/routing, and Wi-Fi access points, managed centrally through the UniFi platform. We design coverage and capacity for your sites. The design work concentrates on three things. Access point placement, which is decided by floor plan, ceiling height, and what the walls are made of (plasterboard, glass, and concrete behave very differently), so a plan drawn from a room count tends to leave dead spots and overlapping cells in equal measure. PoE budget, because access points, cameras, and phones all draw from the same switch supply and a switch that can power every port at full class is a different model from one that cannot. And where the controller lives: self-hosted on a dedicated appliance or hosted, which decides what happens to management access if the site's internet connection is down. Cabling is the part nobody quotes for and everybody needs, so we include the runs and the outlets in the design rather than leaving them to be discovered on installation day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ubiquiti suitable for enterprise use?

It is well-suited to small and mid-size organizations and many distributed offices, offering excellent value and management. For the most demanding security, scale, or compliance needs, Cisco or Fortinet may fit better, and we advise honestly. The practical dividing lines are support expectations, regulatory obligations, and how much a network outage costs per hour. If you need a vendor engineer on a call within a fixed number of hours, or an auditor expects specific certifications, that is the tier above.

Can it manage multiple sites?

Yes. UniFi manages multiple sites from a single console, which suits distributed organizations. It is worth deciding early whether that console is self-hosted or hosted, and what your access to it looks like when a site's own internet connection is the thing that has failed: that is the scenario in which you most need to reach the equipment.

Are there recurring license costs?

No per-device licensing, which is a key cost advantage. We outline any optional services in the quote. It is fair to note the other side of that: with no subscription there is no subscription-backed support contract either, so the operational model assumes your team, or ours, does the first line of support. For many organizations that trade is exactly right, and it should still be a decision rather than a surprise.

How many access points do we need?

It is decided by construction and by device density, not by floor area. A plan is drawn from the actual layout, the wall materials, ceiling height, and where people concentrate: a meeting room with thirty laptops is a capacity problem, a long corridor with thick walls is a coverage problem, and they have different answers. Adding access points to fix a capacity problem without adjusting power and channel plan usually makes it worse, because the cells then interfere with each other.

Can we mix UniFi with what we already have?

Yes, and many sites do: UniFi Wi-Fi behind an existing firewall is a common and sensible arrangement. The thing you give up is the single-console picture, since the parts you keep are managed where they always were. We will say plainly which mixed designs are clean and which ones create two places to look when something breaks.

What about cabling and installation?

The cabling is usually the longest and least predictable part of an office network project, because it involves the building rather than the equipment. We include the cable runs, outlet positions, and any containment or patching work in the design so it is priced and scheduled, rather than being found on the day the switches arrive.
