Intel Xeon Shortage 2026: Lead Times, Price Rises and Alternatives

Intel says Xeon demand exceeds supply into 2027. Emerald and Granite Rapids are tight and list prices rose. A same-socket SKU or AMD EPYC may ship sooner.

There is an Intel Xeon shortage in 2026, and Intel has said so itself. Demand from hyperscalers and AI infrastructure has outrun Intel's production, distributors are filling only part of their orders, and list prices have gone up. The shortage is worst at the low end of the 5th Gen Emerald Rapids range and in popular Xeon 6 Granite Rapids parts. If your project cannot wait, the practical options are a different SKU that fits the same server, a move to AMD EPYC, or a more flexible order. Waiting for the next generation, Diamond Rapids, means waiting until 2027.

Is there an Intel Xeon shortage in 2026?

Yes. In its Q2 2026 quarterly report, Intel said market demand for server products exceeded its available supply due to internal supply constraints, and that while it continues to add factory capacity, it expects industry-wide supply constraints to persist into next year (Intel 10-Q). The same filing shows server average selling prices up 48% year over year, mostly from a richer product mix but partly from pricing actions. Earlier in the year, Reuters reported that Intel warned customers in China of delivery lead times of up to six months, with 4th and 5th Gen Xeon processors in particularly short supply and deliveries rationed (Reuters via Yahoo Finance).

Which Xeon generations are affected?

  • 4th Gen Sapphire Rapids and 5th Gen Emerald Rapids (LGA4677). Fusion Worldwide reports the shortfall is especially acute at the low end of Emerald Rapids, with the Xeon Silver 4510 trading at $2,300 to $2,400 on the open market in May (Fusion Worldwide).
  • Xeon 6 Granite Rapids. Fusion's September report says Granite Rapids demand continues to exceed supply, with expedited batches expected at the end of September and in December (Fusion Worldwide). The Xeon 6767P and 6747P were among the most requested Intel SKUs in May.
  • Xeon 6+ Clearwater Forest. Intel's E-core Xeon 6+ began shipping in June on Intel 18A with up to 288 cores, and partners told ServeTheHome that supporting it is usually a BIOS update in existing Xeon 6900P systems (ServeTheHome). It suits scale-out and cloud-native work rather than every workload.

Server makers feel it directly. Fusion reports that CPU constraints became the second biggest reason, after RDIMM shortages, that server builders were delaying shipments to customers. Our guide to server lead times in 2026 covers the wider effect.

How long are Xeon lead times right now?

Reported ranges vary widely. In May, Fusion Worldwide said Intel distributors were fulfilling only about 40% of yearly backlog allocations, with lead times of 8 to 22 weeks depending on SKU in North America and 6 to 8 months in parts of Asia (Fusion Worldwide). Its September report noted one embedded and industrial account citing Intel server CPU lead times of roughly 50 weeks. There are signs of easing: TrendForce said in September that improving server CPU availability is letting cloud providers and OEMs increase memory purchases (TrendForce), and in July it expected CPU supply to improve progressively from the second half of 2026 through 2027 (TrendForce).

How much have Xeon prices gone up?

Intel confirmed in July that it raised prices on selected server and client processors, citing supply chain costs and strong demand. The flagship 128-core Xeon 6980P rose from $12,460 to $13,955, about 12%, some Granite Rapids parts were reported at roughly twice their mid-2025 retail levels, and some Emerald Rapids 8000-series parts now carry higher recommended prices than at launch (TrendForce News). Fusion Worldwide reports Intel raised pricing about 10% for most customers in 2026. These are list and market figures; what you pay depends on volume and channel, and open-market prices for scarce SKUs run well above list.

Can you use a different Xeon in the same socket?

Often, and it is usually the fastest fix. 4th and 5th Gen Xeon share a platform, and with a BIOS upgrade the same server can support either generation (ServeTheHome). Xeon 6700P and 6500P processors use a different socket, LGA4710 (ServeTheHome), so they cannot go into an LGA4677 server. Before you accept a substitute SKU, check:

  • The server vendor's supported processor list for your exact model and BIOS level.
  • Thermal design power and heatsink requirements, especially in dense 1U systems.
  • Supported memory speed, which can change with the CPU model.
  • Core count against your software licensing, which may make a lower core count cheaper overall.
  • Matched pairs in dual-socket servers: both processors should be the same model and stepping.

For example, if a Xeon Silver 4510 is unavailable, another LGA4677 processor on your server's supported list may ship sooner. Our guide to upgrading the CPU in an existing server covers the checks in detail.

Is AMD EPYC a good alternative to Xeon right now?

It can be, and many buyers are looking. AMD said in August that it has been adding supply through the year and expects server revenue to grow more than 80% year over year in the second half of 2026, citing very strong demand and improved supply (AMD Q2 2026 call transcript). Fusion Worldwide's September report says AMD cut quoted lead times from 20 weeks to 12 weeks (up to 16 for some SKUs) but also announced a server CPU price increase effective October 15 (Fusion Worldwide). Sources disagree on how much EPYC is actually available: in May, Fusion described EPYC as effectively sold out through 2026. Switching platforms also means a new server, new memory configuration and a check on hypervisor cluster compatibility, since mixing CPU vendors in one cluster usually limits live migration. Our comparison of Xeon 6 and EPYC 9005 Turin and our guide to EPYC Venice availability help with the decision.

Should you wait for Diamond Rapids?

Not for 2026 projects. At Hot Chips in August, Intel detailed Xeon 7 Diamond Rapids with up to 256 P-cores and 16-channel memory, with release in the data center set for 2027 (Tom's Hardware). An earlier leak reported by Tom's Hardware put the launch at mid-2027 (Tom's Hardware). A new platform will also need new servers and will face the same memory shortage, so early availability is likely to be limited. If you need capacity in the next two or three quarters, buy a current platform.

How should you buy Xeon processors and servers during the shortage?

  • Approve two or three alternate SKUs that fit your server and licensing before you request quotes.
  • Buy processors with the server where possible, since OEM allocation can differ from distribution stock.
  • Share a forecast with your supplier so allocation can be requested early.
  • Avoid unverified open-market stock. Check the part number and processor code against Intel's listing, and see our note on grey market risks.
  • Act within the quote window, because CPU and memory prices are both moving.

Nexus Compute supplies new hardware only, sourced through authorized distribution channels with the full manufacturer warranty, and checks compatibility against your platform before dispatch. Frequently asked questions

Why is there an Intel Xeon shortage?

Demand from hyperscalers and AI infrastructure has outrun Intel's production. Intel said in its Q2 2026 filing that server demand exceeded its supply due to internal constraints and that it expects industry-wide constraints to persist into 2027.

How long are Intel Xeon lead times in 2026?

Reported lead times vary by SKU and region. Fusion Worldwide reported 8 to 22 weeks in North America and 6 to 8 months in parts of Asia in May, and Reuters reported Intel warning Chinese customers of up to six months. Ask for a confirmed date for your exact part number.

Are Intel Xeon prices going up?

Yes, Intel Xeon prices are going up. Intel confirmed list price increases in July, including the Xeon 6980P rising from $12,460 to $13,955. Open-market prices for scarce SKUs such as the Xeon Silver 4510 have been reported well above list.

Can I put a 5th Gen Xeon in a 4th Gen Xeon server?

A 5th Gen Xeon usually works in a 4th Gen Xeon server if the server vendor supports it. 4th and 5th Gen Xeon share the same platform and socket, and a BIOS upgrade typically enables the newer processors. Check your server's supported CPU list, thermal limits and memory speed first.

When will Intel Diamond Rapids be released?

Intel says Xeon 7 Diamond Rapids will release in 2027, and an earlier leak pointed to mid-2027. It uses a new platform, so it will require new servers and is not an option for projects that need hardware in 2026.

Should I switch from Xeon to AMD EPYC because of the shortage?

It can make sense for new deployments, since AMD says its supply has improved. Switching means a new platform and memory configuration, and mixing CPU vendors in one virtualization cluster usually limits live migration, so plan it rather than treating it as a like-for-like swap.
